ERICA BECKMAN

Suburban-accessible

While the name of lesbian rocker LP's album, Suburban Sprawl and Alcohol, may describe many a gay person's youth, perhaps the most interesting thing about the album is that it is easily

accessible to suburbanites.

In a time when lesbians are expected to either do the acoustic-folk thing or the hard-rocking pseudo-punk thing, LP has planted her flag dead-center in that rocky territory known as "mainstream," putting out an eleven-track CD filled with catchy tunes that could easily fit with a top-40 format.

LP is currently touring the country, performing some dates with Tracy Bonham, some solo and some with the Architects.

She'll hit both Cleveland and Columbus at the beginning of August. Both dates are with the Architects.

On Tuesday, August 2, she will be at the Beachland Ballroom, 15714 Waterloo Road in Teveland, for a 9 pm show. Cover is $7, and the Down Ten will also be play playing. For more information, log onto www.beachlandballroom.com or call 216-383-1124.

The following night, she'll play an 8 pm show for $7 at Little Brother's, 1100 North High Street in Columbus. More information is available by calling 614-421-2025 or going to www.littlebrothers.com.

And, of course, more information about LP herself and the album, available on Light Switch Records, can be found at www.lprock.com.

For another great show, Ember Swift from Toronto and Katie Reider from Columbus will be playing on August 4 at the Beachland Ballroom. Swift is quickly becoming a women's music favorite, while Reider's dedication and skill have cemented her at the top of the lesbian music community in Ohio.

They will be joined by XeLa, an eccentric folk-rocker popular in Cleveland.
